Cherry Spark
Lot W1, Cherry Spark, is produced by Bette Buna in Megadu, Guji. The coffee is processed as a natural using a first-time 144-hour CO₂ fermentation protocol. The process begins with carefully selected highland cherries placed in hermetic barrels or high-capacity bags, where carbon dioxide is introduced to create a controlled low-oxygen environment.
The extended 144-hour CO₂-managed fermentation gives the production team a structured framework for managing time, atmosphere and lot separation before drying. This process is designed to support controlled fermentation over a longer period while maintaining clear handling parameters throughout the lot’s development. Once fermentation is complete, the coffee is dried and prepared according to the required lot specifications before further assessment and export preparation. Lot W1 reflects Bette Buna’s focus on controlled processing, traceable production and practical investment in the farming communities around Megadu, Guji.
Bette Buna
Bette Buna was founded in 2020 by Hester Syoum and Dawit Mersha. Having worked together in Ethiopia since 2009 they have almost two decades of creating opportunities, mentoring communities and building systems that empower people. Their coffee business is built around the community, with a mission to provide structure to help them survive and grow. Using coffee to teach life skills and sustainable agriculture ensures their community has the structure needed to provide for their families.
Farmers in their community learn by doing. Soil management, stumping, shading, composting, farm layouts: all demonstrated in practice at our demofarm. Demo plots and hands-on experience give farmers, literate or not, the confidence and the skills to implement what they see. A leaflet is useless to someone who cannot read it, and a lecture is useless to someone who has never seen the technique done on soil like theirs. Practical coffee growing workshops, classrooms hosted on their land and enabling access to specialty markets to achieve the best price is the structure needed for the communities to succeed.
Megadu Lot W1 is also an impact lot. For this coffee, $0.50 per lb is dedicated to the development of a community composting hub, including a vermicomposting unit. The project is intended to serve as a practical demonstration site where farmers can learn how to produce compost locally and apply it as part of improved farm management. The initiative supports Bette Buna’s wider focus on farm resilience, soil health, productivity and community-led agricultural development.
